THE DAWN CHORUS Feat: FRANK TURNER – CARNIVALESQUE – JELLY MAID MUSIC
Subba fav’s team up with ex-Million Dead-turned-political folk troubadour Frank Turner and turn in something as intense as Johnny Cash at his most redemptive with a twist of melancholy keeping that shifting driving beat from …
The Dawn Chorus ‘Carnivalesque’ – Frank Turner, who guests on vocals is getting mentioned a lot by the sort of influential people who mention people like Frank Turner a lot, only to have people like Frank Turner make them look like they don’t know what they’re talking about when he fails to sell enough records to justify their praise. What a bastard.
As The Dawn Chorus prepare to return with a new album, The Carnival Leaves Town, they’ve announced a free download single to get us all in the mood.
‘Carnivalesque’ reminds us why we love this band – the folky roots and indie sparkle combined into a urban-and-western song of typically excellent proportions.
This single also benefits form the contributions of Frank Turner, who slots into The Dawn Chorus fantastically on this recording (and others on the album!)
The single arrives on February 1st 2010 and you can download it for free to keep you going until the album is released on 22nd February.
Filthy brass, charmingly depressing lyrics and an appearance from Frank Turner. Lets be honest, there’s a lot to like here. It’s eerie just how easy it feels to let yourself go while listening to this song of a man pouring out his feelings. Toe tapping rhythms and head bopping beats combined with the words of torment will leave some listeners in an odd place. But lets not read too much into things. The contrast in moods is great to hear, the song will mean different things to different people. Many will just enjoy it for what it is at face value. A highly infectious and sincere song.
THE DAWN CHORUS – Carnivalesque
Jelly Maid Music
We loved the Dawn Chorus’ debut album and this track, opening with trumpet and swiftly establishing the jaunty rhythms and melancholic vocals that have become somewhat of a trademark. The addition of more aggressive vocals courtesy of Frank Turner adds a new element that takes the band up a notch. We were already looking forward to the new album, now we’re downright excited!
Take one very promising indie-folk band with a series of quality releases in their back catalogue, add a folk-punk legend, mix them together and in theory, you should have a winner. Happily, that is the case as it works in practice here too.
“Carnavalesque” is the first single from “The Carnival Leaves Town”, the new album by The Dawn Chorus (released on 22nd February).
The modus operandi of The Dawn Chorus is to write catchy folk-influenced, trumpet embellished indie tunes. This is another cracker, with Turner chipping in to sing the impassioned chorus, and contribute to the rousing “la-la-la” ending.
This is near perfect indie-pop. Do yourself a favour and investigate The Dawn Chorus now. As this single will be available on 1st February as a free download from http://www.jellymaidmusic.com, what have you got to lose?
Featuring the talents of one Frank Turner, it appears that The Dawn Chorus have really upped their game on their forthcoming album The Carnival Leaves Town.
Featuring some of the best use of brass I have ever heard away from the likes of Calexico, this track is one of the best I have heard so far this year.
Drawing influences from across all Europe, ‘Carnivalesque’ does exactly what it says on the tin, evoking spirited folk music from across Europe. Yet the lyrics hint at darker themes – “If you could see my sordid adulterous dreams/you’d realise my conscience is not so clean/they’re a million light years apart -what I say and what I mean.”
Excellent stuff. I hope you’re paying attention.
